Today, we’re closing Jamie.
The idea was quite simple: private AI with access to your WhatsApp, email and personal documents. You gave Jamie her own email address, and she could work on your behalf or join a conversation as herself.
Sadly, the reality didn’t meet our expectations. It’s extremely hard to keep personal data secure when an AI needs to read it and act on it. Encryption helps, but it doesn’t make those risks disappear. We weren’t comfortable making privacy promises we couldn’t stand behind.
Freddie and I also didn’t like where the company was heading with Jamie. We couldn’t see a practical future that felt worth the trade-off. Too much of it felt like a way to avoid engaging with other people, and that isn’t something we want to build a company around.
We learned some hard lessons. One of them is that being able to build something isn’t a good enough reason to keep building it.
Frankly, it’s a fucking privacy nightmare. I’m not willing to hand more of your personal life to AI providers just to keep a product going.
Thank you for trying Jamie and giving us the chance to work on it. We won’t be continuing. Your privacy matters more.
